HISTORY: CBU was founded in Memphis in 1871 by the Brothers of the Christian Schools. CBU’s mission is built on the Lasallian tradition, founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle in the 1600s. More on CBU history
CAMPUS LIFE: More than half of the freshman class live on campus in traditional residence halls. In addition to sports and fitness, you’ll find more than 40 student clubs, groups, and organizations — including national fraternities and sororites. More on campus life>>
STUDENTS: 1,800 students are enrolled from 27 states and 15 countries. The male/female ratio is 44/56. Ninety-three percent of in-coming freshmen rank in the top half of their high school classes, 31 percent in the top 10 percent.
FACULTY: 92 full-time faculty members teach at CBU. All of them hold at least master’s degrees, and 88 percent hold doctorates or the highest degrees in their field. No courses are taught by teaching assistants. The student/faculty ratio is 13 to 1.
CAMPUS: CBU is located on a 75-acre wooded campus in the heart of midtown Memphis, about four miles east of downtown, near Interstates 40, 240, and 55 and close to major medical centers. Campus map and direction
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: All residence halls are networked, allowing email and Internet access. Hundreds of computers are available on campus in various computer labs. In addition, each residence hall room is wired for free local telephone service and cable television.
LIBRARY: Plough Memorial Library has more than 158,000 volumes, periodicals, and microfilm. Access is available through an online catalog. A variety of electronic and CD-ROM databases are also available.
RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND: While CBU is a Catholic university, 28 different faiths are represented in the student body (23% are Catholic). Religious observances are not required, but students are encouraged to practice their faith openly and actively. The Office of Campus Ministry supports a variety of programs that encourage students to explore their religious beliefs.
