A variety of teaching and assessment methods is used throughout the programme including lectures, workshops, seminars, projects and group exercises with the aim of helping students to become independent learners equipped with practical skills and competencies.

Each module is assessed separately using a mixture of examinations, coursework and projects. One feature is the applied nature of the modules, so students can expect to work on real life cases and industry briefs as part of the learning and assessment processes. In the final year of the programme, students will complete a management report or a dissertation linked to their work placement.

CAREERS
Employment prospects are very good and there is a large range of employers offering careers in Human Resource Management across all sectors.

OTHER INFO

COURSE FEES - Year 1 entry
The tuition fee for 2009 entry for applicants assessed as ‘home’ for fees purposes is £3,225. This course attracts a scholarship of £500.

At the centre of any organisation lies its people - and as a result, a career in Human Resource Management can be an immensely fulfilling career for the student interested in the ‘people’ aspects of a business.

On this programme, not only do you get a thorough grounding in the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding required in this challenging yet highly rewarding field, you also get the chance to develop reflective practices and critical thinking - essential attributes for the effective manager equipped to handle change.

Students are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and, with the support of academic staff and colleagues, take the first steps in managing their career as an HR professional. Normally all students will join the professional body, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).

Year 1
The first year is an introduction to modern business and management and so, in line with the NBS philosophy, students study subjects such as:
International Business Environment
Management
Finance
Business Processes and How to Solve Business Problems
Students also take a module in Human Resource Management in order to develop an appreciation of the role of this functional area in business.

Year 2
In the second year the management topics continue and students study subjects such as:
Performance Management
Personal and Organisation Development
Marketing and International Business Contexts
There are also modules developing the HRM functional area such as HRM Practice and Change, Work and Diversity.

Year 3 - Placement
The third year of the programme is spent on an industrial placement. This provides vital experience that lays a strong foundation for the final year of the programme, and enhances job prospects. A dedicated placement unit manages and co-ordinates the placements with partners that have included Peugeot, IBM, Marks and Spencer, and the Post Office. The placement element is accredited by the City and Guilds.

Year 4
All final year students do a dissertation or a management report and modules in Business Ethics and Strategic Management and Leadership.

In addition, students on this programme study:
Employee Relations and Rewards
Culture and Organisations
Employee Resourcing and Development

n today’s increasingly international and competitive business world, successful organisations are turning to the effective management of their human resources as the key to sustaining their competitive advantage.
This programme provides you with a critical appreciation of how to build up human capability so that both you as an individual, and the human resources you manage, add value to the organisation.

The programme has been developed for those of you who are eager to broaden your knowledge and challenge your practice of Human Resource Management and Development.

You will normally have a first degree combined with a minimum of two to three years supervisory or management experience in a relevant context and be ready to progress to middle and senior management level having already proved yourself as a self-motivated team player capable of handling responsibility and communicating effectively with people at all levels.

Programme content and delivery

This demanding, fast-paced and highly relevant programme focuses on developing the solid, practical, professional and interpersonal skills fundamental to the management of people. It also equips you with the ability to understand and critically evaluate current, individual and organisational practices within different contexts so that you can provide solutions that add value to your organisation.

The part-time Masters/Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resource Management and Development is designed to fit in with existing commitments. Attendance is flexible - either one afternoon and one evening or two evenings per week (preference must be registered in advance). Either Monday and Wednesday 5-9pm or Wednesday 1-9pm.

A considerable amount of pre-reading is expected for the taught sessions, as directed by the programme tutors. Students are also expected to work within learning sets and are expected to prepare drafts of written work to circulate and discuss with student colleagues. Overall, students can expect to spend approximately 8-15 hours of independent study per week outside the classroom.

Within the programme, you will study a range of human resource topics, develop your skills as an HR practitioner, as well as studying some general business and management subjects designed to develop your strategic business awareness and leadership potential and provide you with a greater understanding of the theory and practice of international business. Through a choice of options you will be given the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of HRM, such as Development, Reward and Diversity.

Although you can leave with a Postgraduate Diploma, if you progress to the Masters stage of the programme you will engage in some ‘real-life’ work-based problem-solving as you research and complete a Management Report Masters Dissertation. If you do choose to finish your studies at the Postgraduate Diploma stage, there will be future opportunities to progress to Masters through the completion of a dissertation. In both cases you will be appointed a personal research supervisor and will be required to submit an assessed research proposal prior to embarking on the dissertation itself.

Distinctive characteristics

The postgraduate diploma in Human Resource Management and Development is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Successful completion of all elements of the programme makes you eligible for Graduate Membership of the CIPD.

This qualification will put you well ahead of other graduates in the job market as across the globe employers increasingly regard a CIPD qualification as a measure of capability and added value. Newcastle Business School will pay for participants enrolling on this programme to become student members of the CIPD (student membership is a pre-requisite to gaining graduate membership). Depending on your management experience there is the opportunity to gain full Chartered Membership of the CIPD on completion of the programme.

The MA Humanities Research is a programme intended for graduates who have already defined their own area of research interest. It provides them with an opportunity to work on this project at Master’s level, under the supervision of research-active academic staff.

The taught modules of the programme focus on the theoretical debates and current standards of practice in the Humanities disciplines. This material is designed to inform and help frame students’ individual research projects. Research training is also provided as an integral part of the taught programme. Particular emphasis is placed on skills relating to locating source materials, using archives and libraries, formulating and planning a large research project, and writing and organising a dissertation. This training should offer a valuable grounding for those students intending eventually to proceed to doctoral research in the Humanities area.

The culmination of the programme is the production of a Master’s dissertation of around 20,000 words. The dissertation should normally be submitted in September, at the end of students’ scheduled course of study. The MA Research is part of a larger framework of Masters’ programmes in the Humanities at Northumbria. Students should benefit from the experience of being a member of a dynamic postgraduate community. They are expected to work imaginatively and independently, and should be capable of articulating their ideas and grasp of the subject in both written work and group discussions.
