The Saint Joseph College Family Studies major provides an in-depth analysis of the impact and meaning of family in our world. As a Family Studies major, you will study a variety of aspects related to the modern family, including nutrition, family relations, financial planning and research. A Personalized Course of Study
As a Family Studies major, your studies begin with a core curriculum that includes Psychology, Sociology, Writing, Biology, Human Development, and Family Relations. You then choose either Consumer Sciences or Contemporary Family Issues as your area of concentration. As a concentrated major, your course work, reflects your area of interest. Many students minor in Management, Psychology, or Gerontology to complement their work in Family Studies.
Internship Opportunities
Students of the Family Studies degree program participate in self designed internships throughout the area. Recently, students have worked and studied at the Department of Consumer Protection, Saint Agnes Home, the state judicial system, the Department of Children and Families, and area youth and community service bureaus.

As a student in the American Studies program, you will obtain a broad liberal arts education through classes in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The American Studies major offers an interdisciplinary curriculum focusing on American life and culture – its origins, development and contemporary expression. Students in the program combine areas of interest to create a tailor-made program of study. Some examples include American Studies combined with: Native American literature; labor history; film studies; or decorative arts.
Important features of the curriculum include:
an introduction to historical analysis, research and record-keeping through experiences in archives, museums, libraries and historical societies
a strong cross-disciplinary sense of the interrelationships among the people, events, and physical environments of regions, using local studies to build a comprehensive understand of America as a whole
a foundation of understanding and critical ability to interpret American culture and to study it in a global perspective
analytical, research, oral and written communication skills which are important in business, education, and government
The major consists of a minimum of 39 credits, distributed among at least three disciplines concerned with some aspect of American experiences. Required courses include: AMST/HIST 201: Workshop in History: Going to the Source; AMST 276: Cultural Studies; and AMST 499: Senior Coordinating Seminar. American Studies majors complete 18 credits in one of the three focus areas: American Economy and Polity (Economics and Political Science); American History and Society (History and Sociology); or American Representations (Art, Literature, Philosophy). Elementary and secondary teaching certification options are available.
Internship Opportunities
Internships provide an opportunity for practical experience in a professional agency related to your field of study. Students majoring in American Studies have held internships at the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Connecticut Historical Society, the Connecticut Senate Majority Office, and local law firms and libraries.
Internships for College credit are available at historical societies, corporations, government agencies, museums, and community non-profits. Access to the day-to-day operation of these professional environments provides invaluable insight and experience when planning a career.

The founding goal of the Department of Digital Literature and Arts is to meet the demands of our nations’ “Challenge 2008—National Development Plan,” and cope with the needs of cultural content and creative industry. Therefore, the educational objective of the department is to cultivate students with abilities in artistic and literary creation by the integration of digital design skills and knowledge.
The academic programs of the department stress the following:

Television and film studies is one of the University’s most exciting programs, leading to important career positions in the communications industry. The entertainment industry is now the second largest revenue producing industry in New York City and New York State. In New York City, media and entertainment gained 10,500 jobs last year, a 6.6% boost. Movie production was up 10%, and broadcasting added 1,700 jobs. Experts predict that communication and entertainment will continue to be areas of employment growth for the next 20 years.
